RAF Kenley Air Day 2010 took place on Saturday 14th August to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Organisers estimated 6000 people attended throughout the day to enjoy The Great War Display Team, various aircraft landing for a static display, Croydon Airport Model Flying Club, MG Car Pageant and The Breitling Wing Walkers. Unfortunately because of the appalling weather the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with a Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster could not take place.
Guest of Honour was Flt Lt William Walker who was posted to Kenley on 19th August 1940 the day after the Luftwaffe visited, signed programmes and chatted to visitors about his time at Kenley. Many veterans attended this special day recalling their experiences to visitors.
At Olivish Restaurant in Caterham High Street, on Monday 26th July 2010 there was an open mike night. Every Monday night now, there is an opportunity for you to perform, either by telling jokes or singing along to the live music provided. If you would like to bring your own instrument and perform you are more than welcome.
George Newman a local comedian entertained diners, as well as a number of local talented singers and musicians; one singer who preformed was on holiday from Australia!
The 5th Kenley Common Family Fun Day was on Sunday 11th July with over 50 stalls and attractions; many activities were free due to local sponsorship and support form Kendra.
A reptile zoo with snakes, crocodiles and lizards caught the attention of many visitors as well as Birds of Prey displays. Another unusual attraction was the medieval ‘living history’ group with their encampment, re-enacting life in the 14th/15th Century with dancing, swordplay and archery. [Read more...]
On Sunday 4th July 2010 a sponsored bike ride was held at Kenley Aerodrome to raise funds for a new toilet block at Skaterham, the local skate park based in the old Guards Chapel in Guards Avenue, Caterham.
Alex Edge from Alexander Crescent in Caterham wanted to raise the £30,000 himself, needed for the new toilet block after hearing members of staff discussing the need to raise the money. With other members of Skaterham and the help of his Mum Maria and Dad Simon the Sponsored event was organised in just 3 weeks. [Read more...]
The 2010 Old Coulsdon Village Fair took place on Saturday 3rd July in Grange Park, Old Coulsdon.
The Mayor of Croydon opened the proceedings organised by Coulsdon Manor Rotary Club for those living in Old Coulsdon and the local area. Local charities and organisations are encouraged to have stalls to raise funds for themselves, while the arena events use local schools and clubs to put on displays.
